COKE 10K IS THIS
SATURDAY!!!
Several things that runners need to know. Please review the different topics for race information
below:
HEAT
Temperatures are going to be warm, 70 at the start, 76 at 10
a.m. We are making several concessions
regarding the temperature. In the event
of a medical emergency, MRHC has instructed spectators to dial 911.
*MRHC is
providing 6 medical stations on the course. (See map for location on coke 10k
facebook page).
*Magnolia
Regional Health Center held CPR training classes for 15 race workers yesterday.
*We are Increasing
the cold Kimberly Clark wet rags to 4 stations.
*We are keeping
the finish line open an additional 15 minutes … total course time = 2 hours and 15 min.
*A shower station
and a CFD spray station will be at the finish line.
*A Corinth Fire
Dept. spray station will be near the 4 mile mark.
*A cool down area
for EMTs to use at the finish line is available, courtesy of Nickels Graphics.
*Four
water/entertainment stations are on the course.
*We are requesting
that residents on the course put out spray hoses, spraying ONLY one side of the
street.
PHOTOS
SNAP IT SPORTS will be here making photos. Be sure you wear your number on the front and
that it’s visible to photographers and officials. After the race you will get an email telling
you how to view your photos.
If I were to do it, I’d exit Hwy 72 at Fulton
Drive (by Kroger and K-Mart) and travel north on Fulton Drive about three
quarters of a mile, past a 4 way stop and under a R.R. underpass, then turn
east towards downtown on Waldron. Once you cross the railroad, then park!!
There is a green field on the left, behind the shop area of the Coke plant,
then on the right is Trail Head Park, around the first corner to the right
there are 2-3 large parking areas. This will enable you to walk to the finish
line (The Coke plant) and get your packet, then to the start line….2-3 blocks away.
Note on the map the NEW location of the
Porta-potties. They are located between the start and the finish, also.
PHOTO STATIONS
At the finish line, there are several places you can make
photos. We have the traditional large
banner, which will be located near the band stand. Additionally, there will be several of the
larger-than-life Coke Bottle trophies scattered around for you to use as
backdrops. Plus there is a new fantastic
antique-looking painted wall that would make a great back-drop.
GUMTREE
Our sister race, the Gumtree, just down the road in Tupelo,
is next weekend. It’s a large and fun
race and has been for decades. Support
our neighbor by registering and running the Gumtree and being a part of this
event. There is a new starting/finishing
location that is sure to add to the fun.
If you will note the success that the XC teams from NE Mississippi have
annually in the State, you have to know that the Gumtree and Coke 10k have had
a hand in that!
FINISHLINE MUSIC
We
are delighted to again welcome the fabulous First Lady of Sound, Mary Mason,
and the Mary Mason Band, back to the Coke 10k.
Mary and the guys captivated the crowd last year on the music stage at
the Coke 10k finish line and will do so again this year. Band member John (Big Foot) Aikin, fresh off
another outstanding marathon performance at the heat fest in Boston, will be
running and playing guitar. We know you
will give the Mary Mason Band a warm welcome at Coke 10k.
PERSONAL DATA RESULTS
Get your “personal data results” immediately after you
finish by visiting the table located on the porch of the Package Pickup
building. It’s a neat computerized
“ticker tape” you can stick on your race number as a continuing reminder of
your accomplishment.
ROD SIMMONS
Rod Simmons, from the Jackson area, knows more about racing
in Mississippi than anyone. Be sure to ‘like’ Rods Racers on Facebook and
follow him on Twitter. He’s a great running
promoter and does a lot for the running community of Mississippi. He will be here this year for the Coke 10k
taking photos and viewing our race. Make
him welcome!
Weather on Saturday is going to be warmer than we have had
lately. Additionally, the sun is to be
shining brightly. While that makes it
nice for the spectators, it makes it even hotter for the runners. Remember to hydrate reasonably before and
during the race, however, you should not drink too much. While maintaining modesty, don’t wear too
many clothes so the air can circulate around your skin.
You may need to slow your pace to accommodate the warm
weather. If you feel yourself
overheating, or if you feel faint, slow down and walk.
We will have some spray stations on the course, but you can
avoid them if you wish.
If you are a spectator and live on the course, you may want
to set up a garden hose spray station to aid the runners. MAKE SURE YOU ONLY SPRAY PART OF THE ROAD, as
many runners will not want to be wet.
Remember those iPhones, iPods, Garmin GPSs, wireless earphones are very
valuable and if you spray those the runner is going to be very unhappy.
